The church is known as Tetri Giorgi, the White George, and the epithet is not accidental. The veneration of the White George in Georgia belongs to an ancient layer of folk belief, where the image of the saint merged with earlier notions of a bright protector, and the epithet itself points to the sun and light.
An important caveat about the village name: the Kakhetian Atsquri where this church stands has no connection with Atskuri in Samtskhe-Javakheti, known for its fortress and its miraculous icon. These are different places at opposite ends of the country. The village lies south of Akhmeta, and a kilometre away stands its another church, of Saint Tevdore.
The place is busy by Kakhetian standards, so a weekday morning is better for a quiet look around. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, and speak quietly on the grounds.
