The Kviratskhoveli church stands in the Kakhetian Atskuri, south of the Martyr church. The feast of renewal that gave the church its name falls on the first Sunday after Easter, and churches dedicated to it are scattered across Kakheti.
The village belongs to Telavi Municipality and stands west of Ikalto, right where vineyards give way to forest. Telavi is less than half an hour away by car, and the road to Alaverdi monastery passes nearby. Summers are hot, and vines cover everything around.
Enter quietly if the door is open, and do not disturb those at prayer. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Combine the visit with neighbouring villages to save time.
- Bring a torch if it is dark inside.
- Keep some cash for a donation, as there is no card terminal.
Getting there
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
