The church of St Nicholas stands in Khashmi village. St Nicholas is venerated as the patron of travellers, and churches of his name stand all over Georgia, from the ports to the mountains.
Khashmi lies by the road to the Gombori pass, and the village has several churches: the basilica of St George about a kilometre and a half away, the church of St Marine further off, some three and a half kilometres. The Trinity church of Katsareti also stands apart from the village.
The church is rural and in use: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet. If you want to see all the Khashmi churches, it is easier to start from the basilica, the others are not far from it, and half a day is enough for the whole round.
