The parish church of St George stands in Ujarma. St George is venerated in Georgia above all other saints, and hundreds of churches carry his name, from town cathedrals to village chapels.
Ujarma is an old place: a fortress rises here above the Iori valley, one of the notable strongholds of Kakheti, and several shrines are scattered around it. The nearest is the Kviratskhoveli church, about three hundred metres away, then the Mariamtsminda cave by Mukhrovani and the Ogondaanti sakdari, both roughly two kilometres off.
The church is in use, so the rules are the usual ones: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet, and photography inside only by permission. If the fortress is on your list too, allow half a day for Ujarma: the climb to the walls takes time and the descent is harder in the heat.
