The basilica of St George stands in Khashmi village. A basilica is a long church without a dome, one of the oldest types of Georgian church, and such buildings are recognised at a glance.
Khashmi lies by the road that climbs over the Gombori pass towards Telavi. The village holds two more churches, St Nicholas about a kilometre and a half away and St Marine two kilometres off, while some four and a half kilometres further stands the Trinity church of Katsareti.
For pilgrims this makes a convenient first stop: the three village churches and Katsareti can be walked in a single day. The usual rules hold in the churches, covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet, and at the monastery a request not to photograph without permission is added.
