Mariamtsminda is the Georgian name of the Holy Mother of God, and the site near Mukhrovani village carries exactly that name. This is not a built church but a cave, a place of prayer set in the rock.
The Ujarma district is close at hand from Mukhrovani: the parish church of St George stands about two kilometres away, the Kviratskhoveli church a little further, and the fortress of Ujarma rises above the Iori valley. The churches of Khashmi lie in the other direction, some three and a half kilometres off.
The cave is open, but it is worth coming prepared: it is dark inside and the floor is uneven, so a torch and steady footwear are needed. This is a place of prayer, so the candles, icons and whatever others have left here are better left untouched.
