A parish church of Saint Nicholas. The village name is made of two parts, and the second, ubani, means a quarter. The word is among the commonest components of Georgian place naming: we have met it in Kakhetian Vardisubani and in the quarter names of Imeretian villages such as Dilikauri and Akhaldaba.
Kartubani lies north of Lagodekhi, in eastern Kakheti. The century of building is not established and no details have survived, which is ordinary for the far Kakhetian villages.
The doors here are opened every day rather than only for a service, so you can look in almost any time. For this part of the province that is a rarity: more often there is either an open yard with no set order or a locked church. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf.
