A male monastic house dedicated to the Archangels, that is Michael and Gabriel together. The dedication is among the commonest in Georgia, yet the house itself is a rarity here: it is the only monastic community in the Kakhetian part of the list.
It stands about a kilometre from the parish church of Saint George in the same village, and two church sites in one village are also uncommon in eastern Kakheti. Tela lies north of Lagodekhi. The century of foundation is not established.
The house is in use: covering clothing, a headscarf for women, voices kept low. Monastic houses keep their own order of the day, and a visit is worth planning with that in mind.
