The church of Saint George stands in Mshvidobiani, a small village on the Kakhetian plain. Its name carries a second toponym, Sakobo: the two neighbouring villages read as a single cluster here, and the parish historically served both. The word mshvidobiani means peaceful.
The village lies in the Lagodekhi part of Kakheti, at the foot of the Caucasus range and close to the Azerbaijani border. To the north begins the Lagodekhi reserve, the oldest in Georgia, with waterfalls and beech forests; to the south the plain runs on with its vineyards. Churches of Saint George are almost routine in this region: most Kakhetian village churches carry his name.
This is an ordinary village church rather than a pilgrimage site: it may keep no fixed schedule, and the doors open for a service or on request. Come with shoulders and knees covered; a headscarf is useful for women.
