The Virgin Mary church stands in Sabue, apart from the church of Saint Shio. This small village ended up with several places of prayer at once, including the revered site of Didbatoni nearby.
Sabue lies in Kvareli Municipality, in the belt of foothills above the Alazani valley. The area is known for vineyards and for its closeness to Gremi, so people often stop here on the way to the fortress. Further north the climb towards the Caucasus range begins.
Photography inside is best agreed with whoever looks after the church. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Leave spare time for the climb.
- In summer bring a hat, as there is almost no shade.
- There is no need to touch candles or icons.
Getting there
- Leave the car at the nearest street and continue on foot.
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
