A caveat is needed at once. Gremi is a name known far beyond Kakheti: above the village rises the royal citadel with the church of the Archangels, which draws visitors for the history of the Kakhetian kingdom. The church described here is a different one in the same village, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, and the two should not be confused.
The Saint Nicholas church stands in the built-up part of Gremi, among the yards, below the citadel. The village lies north-west of Kvareli, on the way to Shilda and further to the foothills of the Caucasus range, among the vineyards of the Kvareli neighbourhood.
There is no fixed schedule of services, but the village is lively and it is usually possible to step inside. The usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, quiet. If you have come to Gremi for the citadel, allow a quarter of an hour for the village church too: it shows ordinary parish life beside a royal monument.
