The church dedicated to Saint Shio stands in Sabue, only three hundred metres from the Saint Nicholas church of Gremi. Shio of Mgvime, one of the thirteen Assyrian fathers, is venerated across eastern Georgia, and dozens of village churches carry his name.
Sabue belongs to Kvareli Municipality and adjoins Gremi, the former capital of the Kakhetian kingdom. The village is small and sits in the valley of the Intsoba river at about five hundred metres. Gremi fortress and the road to Kvareli are both a stone's throw away.
A headscarf is useful for women, as it may be required at the entrance. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
