The church carries a single word in its name, natlismtsemeli, the one who gives baptism: the dedication to John the Baptist reads straight from it, and the church has no second qualifier.
Kardenakhi lies between Gurjaani and Sighnaghi, on the southern edge of the Alazani valley, and is known above all for winemaking: its vineyards and the vintage wine of the same name are known far beyond the region. The village holds several church sites, and this one stands in the built-up part, among the yards.
There is no fixed schedule of services, but the village is lively and it is usually possible to step inside. The usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, quiet. A stop here combines well with tasting routes through the Kakhetian villages between Gurjaani and Sighnaghi.
