The Galavani church stands in Anaga, about seven hundred metres from the village church of Saint George. The word galavani means a fence or fortress wall, and such a name usually points to a walled church yard.
Anaga belongs to Sighnaghi Municipality and lies in the Alazani valley below the Sighnaghi ridge. From here one sees clearly how the plain runs off towards the Caucasus ranges in the north. Sighnaghi itself with its fortress wall is about half an hour away.
A headscarf is useful for women, as it may be required at the entrance. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Allow no more than half an hour for the visit.
- Bring water, as there are no kiosks nearby.
- Keep some cash for a donation, as there is no card terminal.
Getting there
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
