The church is known as Sabatsminda, and the name unfolds simply: it means Saint Saba, that is a dedication to Sabbas the Sanctified, founder of Palestinian monasticism. In the Georgian tradition his name is Saba.
This is the most visited of the three sites in Kardenakhi: the village also holds a chapel whose dedication has not survived and a church of the Virgin in the eastern part. Kardenakhi is one of the large wine-making villages of north-eastern Kakheti, set among the vineyards of the Alazani valley.
The church is open from morning to evening, so you can call in at almost any hour of the day. All three sites fit within a couple of kilometres. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women.
