The church is dedicated to Father Gabriel, widely venerated in Georgia: in Georgian he is called mama Gabrieli, and also Gabriel Salos, that is the holy fool. A prayer house of the same saint stands in Zinobiani, in the north of the region. Dedications of this kind usually mark a new or recently renewed church.
Arashenda lies on the Alazani plain north-east of Gurjaani, among vineyards. Care is needed with the name here: a locality in the foothills far to the north, between Akhmeta and Telavi, carries the same name, but these are different places. This village also holds an Ascension church.
The church is active and usually open; the rules are standard: covered shoulders and knees, quiet inside. The roads in the village are flat and easy. If you are driving the Kakheti highway, the detour is short and combines easily with a stop in Gurjaani.
