The church of the Ascension stands in Arashenda. In Georgian the feast is called amaghleba, a word meaning a rising or lifting up, and such churches were often built on higher ground with a view over the surroundings.
The village lies south of Gurjaani, away from the main road of the Alazani valley: a turning leads off the highway and continues as a village street. Vineyards stretch around, the ones Kakheti is known for, and to the north the valley opens up with the Caucasus range beyond it. Arashenda also preserves traces of an older church building.
The churchyard is freely accessible, but getting inside is not always possible: a village church may keep no fixed schedule. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, keep quiet, and a headscarf is useful for women.
