The basilica is located approximately two kilometers southwest of the center of Gurjaani, away from the urban development. Visitors note the quiet and green surroundings; there are few other reviews of the site.
The name refers to Gareji. In Kakheti, dedications to David of Gareji, one of the Thirteen Syrian Fathers, are common, and the David Gareji monastery itself historically owned land in Kakhetian villages. The sources do not explain the exact connection between this basilica and Gareji, so only the name itself and no conclusions are drawn.
There are no dates or architectural descriptions for the church in open sources.
The surrounding area is densely populated with churches. 1.3 kilometers to the southeast is Kvelatsminda, dating from the 8th-9th centuries, the only double-domed church in Georgia. 1.2 kilometers to the north stands the Zgudri Church, about which even less is known.
🕍 What to see
The basilica building, courtyard, and surrounding greenery. It's logical to combine the trip with Kvelatsminda, which is less than a kilometer and a half away.
