The place is known in the district simply as the Artana Mother of God. A name in which the village and the Virgin stand instead of a church dedication usually belongs in Kakheti to an old revered spot to which the village walks on a feast day.
Artana lies in the foothills above the Alazani valley. The neighbours are very close: the sakdari of St. Nino about three hundred metres away, the village church of the Virgin nine hundred, the doorless church of St. George eight hundred. The cemetery church stands two kilometres off, and Napareuli is about three.
The five Artana shrines can be walked in an hour, yet on the ground they look alike, so follow the coordinates. People behave here as in a church: quietly, in modest dress, carrying nothing away.
