The church stands in the village cemetery of Artana. Cemetery churches in Kakheti were built small and often without a separate dedication: they served funerals and days of remembrance rather than Sunday worship.
Artana lies in the foothills of the Alazani valley, two kilometres from Napareuli. The village gives the district several shrines at once: a church of the Virgin stands about a kilometre and a half away, beyond it the Artana Mother of God and the sakdari of St. Nino. Five kilometres off, towards Lalisquri, rise the church of St. Eustathius and the churches of St. Nicholas and St. John the Theologian.
The cemetery is in use, and restraint is expected here: do not walk between the graves without need, do not photograph people, leave no litter. On the days of remembrance after Easter week the whole village gathers here.
