Tedotsminda breaks into two parts: Tedo is the Georgian form of the name Theodore and tsminda means saint. Together they give Saint Theodore, and this fused spelling is ordinary in Georgian place naming: the names of saints often merge with the qualifier into a single word.
Which Theodore is meant is not specified, and Georgia has two: an early Christian soldier saint and a Georgian priest martyr. We unpacked the same uncertainty at the Ruispiri church near Telavi. Makhatauri lies in eastern Imereti, off the road towards Sachkhere. The century of building is not established.
The parish is rural and services are infrequent. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf. If the doors are locked, ask about the time in the village.
