A parish church of Saint George, the main church of the village. The name Savane itself comes from a Georgian word meaning a shelter or monastic dwelling: it was applied to places linked with monastic settlement, so in that sense the village name is itself a church one.
Savane lies in eastern Imereti, off the road towards Sachkhere, among the hills. Another church of the village, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, stands about three hundred metres away, so both can be walked in one visit. The century of building is not established, and we make no claim about the age of the church.
The parish is active and services follow the church year. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf, and keep quiet inside. The place is visited, with noticeably more people at weekends.
