A village church of Saint George carrying the name Alaverdi. The word came from Turkic and means roughly God gave. Such names are not rare in Georgian place naming: empires changed their borders while the words stayed.
A caveat is needed at once: in Georgia the name Alaverdi belongs to the Kakhetian cathedral, one of the tallest churches in the country, and this is a different place. Zeda Alisubani, that is Upper Alisubani, lies north-east of Zestafoni in the upper part of the village cluster, and shares nothing with Kakhetian Alaverdi but a name. The century of building is not established.
The parish is rural and services are infrequent. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf. The climb into the upper part of the cluster is better done in dry weather.
