Gombori Mountain

Gombori Pass is not a museum or a fortress. It's a road. Gombori Pass connects Tbilisi to Telavi by the shortest possible route, around 95 kilometres. Travellers take this route not because it shaves time off the alternative via Sighnaghi, but because the road itself is the destination: switchbacks, forest, a 1,620-metre pass and a bird's-eye view of the Alazani Valley.

If you're looking for the 50-metre rock pillar near the village of Verona, that's a different site, Gombori Pillars, which stands at the foot of the same range but isn't the pass itself.

🏔️ Tsiv-Gombori: The Range, the Mountain and the Pass, Sorted Out

Tsiv-Gombori Range

The naming confusion is understandable, so here's the breakdown.

The Gombori Range (sometimes called Tsiv-Gombori), a mountain massif in Kakheti, located between the settlement of Vaziani and the city of Telavi, on the northern side of the range. It divides Kakheti into two halves: inner and outer.

Mount Tsivi, the range's highest point, reaching 1,991 metres above sea level. The compound name "Tsiv-Gombori" comes directly from this peak.

Gombori Pass, not a summit but a saddle, the point where the road crosses the range. The highway runs at an elevation of approximately 1,620 metres here. When people say "Mount Gombori" in a travel context, they usually mean this pass and the panorama from it, not a specific peak.

🚗 The Road: From Sartichala to Telavi

Heading east from Tbilisi along the main highway, the road forks left at the police checkpoint near Sartichala and climbs through scenic countryside toward the pass. From the turnoff to Telavi, the road covers 65 kilometres.

Tsiv-Gombori Range

The climb passes through mixed forest, deciduous lower down, with conifers appearing closer to the pass. At the highest point of the route, the saddle, a panorama opens up: on one side, inner Kakheti and forest; on the other, on a clear day, the Alazani Valley and the snow-capped peaks of the Greater Caucasus on the horizon.

The road over Gombori Pass is well-paved and well-maintained. It closes only in winter, after heavy snowfall, and even then for just a couple of days. In the Soviet era the road frequently closed in winter due to poor surfacing; today it operates year-round, though landslide-prone sections remain in places.

Check road conditions before winter travel: ice can form on the switchbacks and the road may briefly close after heavy snowfall.

📜 A Bit of History

Mountain trails and caravan routes have existed on this pass for a very long time, researchers cite the 1st century BC. This isn't a modern tourist road but a route with centuries of continuous use behind it.

In earlier eras, the road followed a slightly different course: it began in the village of Khashmi and ran through Katsareti, past the Trinity Monastery. The modern highway is a more direct, more convenient version of the same crossing.

Tsiv-Gombori Range

The Gombori Range was a strategic height in the past and was fortified accordingly. The first landmark on the route, Ujarma Fortress, was the residence of Vakhtang Gorgasali, the founder of Tbilisi. If the king and his retinue laid out this route during their travels, it's no surprise it's still in use a millennium and a half later.

💡
Editor's tip

The best view comes early in the morning, when the Alazani Valley is still wrapped in fog while the pass itself sits in full sun, creating a sea-of-clouds effect below your feet. Pull over at the viewpoint near the road's highest point rather than driving straight through. This is exactly the view people make the detour for.

🍷 Along the Way: Monasteries and a Winery

The drive over Gombori isn't a dead stretch between two points, it's a route with worthwhile stops.

Dzveli Shuamta (Old Shuamta), a 5th-century monastery, among the oldest Christian complexes in Kakheti.

Akhali Shuamta (New Shuamta), a 16th-century monastery a few kilometres from Old Shuamta.

Chateau Mere. At the edge of the Gombori forest, just a couple of kilometres past the turn to Shuamta Monastery and four kilometres short of Telavi, stands Chateau Mere, the first proper winery on the road into Kakheti. Not a tourist showpiece but a working, years-proven operation. Tour groups often stop here for lunch, dinner or a tasting.

Sasadilo village. The name comes from the Georgian word for "dining": travellers heading toward Telavi traditionally stopped here to eat. A small but telling detail, people have been eating along this exact route for centuries.

🗿 Gombori Pillars Nearby

Within the same range, near the village of Verona, stands a separate natural landmark: Gombori Pillars, a 50-metre rock formation with caves on its south-eastern slope, inside the Mariamjvari Reserve and Korugi Sanctuary. This isn't part of the pass itself but a nearby site worth the detour if you're stopping in the Verona area.
