Dormition convent in Vekhini, Kakheti: history and architecture

The Dormition of the Mother of God Convent is one of the places worth visiting, not least because it is hidden from the mass tourist flow, thus preserving its authenticity. Another name for the church is the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God.

This is the eastern part of the country, far from the center. You might not even know there's anything worthwhile here. This monastery is located in the mountains, far from the bustling cities. It's quite small, so even photographs exude peace and quiet. Nature lovers will appreciate this.

Historically, not much is known about this place. Perhaps that's why it has a slightly mysterious air. No one knows the exact date of the church's construction, but at first glance, it's clear that its current appearance was the result of two construction phases.

The first was the construction of the main section, small in size but interesting in appearance, as it was built of cobblestone. The second phase gave it its current appearance.

It is believed that a brick dome was added to the church in the early 17th century. This timeframe was determined by G. Chubinashvili, a researcher of Georgian architecture who traveled throughout the country on expeditions. Based on this, we can assume that this small church in the Georgian hinterland was quite important. After all, it wasn't demolished or abandoned, but rather renovated.
