Khornabuji Fortress in Kakheti: Tamar’s Castle & Route

A Long Historical Path

Khornabuji has a long and colorful history. This fortified city is first mentioned in historical sources in the 5th century. It was at this time that Vakhtang I founded a Christian church here. There is also evidence that some information about this place was already known in the 4th century, thanks to the ruler Bakur. After a temple was built on the site of this cultural heritage, Vakhtang I Gorgasali transferred ownership to his son, Dachi I Ujarmeli.

During a period of complex changes in the country, the fortified city became the center of the Persian Empire. This event occurred in the 4th century AD.

By the second half of the 6th century, the city was completely liberated. A representative of the Erismtavari clan was appointed its ruler.

Over time, namely in the 7th century, Khornabuji became the main center of the Saeristavo culture.

After the feudal monarchy triumphed in Georgia, the city was named the center of Saeristo. It was at this time that one of the prominent feudal families had an estate here.

As is well known, Georgia's landmarks are renowned for their cultural and historical value. This fortress city is no exception. By the 1260s, this cultural monument was again under attack. It was besieged by the Tatar army. In the first half of the 17th century, the Khornabuji residence became part of the Tatars. This was a great gift in terms of Georgia's historical heritage. Abbas I became the head of Kakheti.

But a brave man was able to free the city from the Tatar invaders. This man was Zhora Saakadze, who in 1625 removed the Tatar shackles from the Georgian city and liberated Khornabuji from the Persians. Here, King Teimuraz I captured his enemies.
