Kakhisi Lake: Mountain Recreation and Scenic Routes

Nature lovers do not immediately find the answer to the question of what to see in Georgia, except for the well-known national parks and nature reserves. Ecotourists they understand that the most beautiful places in Georgia should be sought outside the city walls. The picturesque lake Kahimi, which few people know about, is located 20 km from the city Borjomi in the Borjomi gorge, which is located at an altitude of 1752 m above sea level. To the right of the lake, the waters of the Kura sung by Lermontov flow, and the mountains of the Trialet ridge rise nearby.

Rivers do not flow into the lake, so the water level is mainly replenished by underground sources, rains and snowmelt. The maximum depth of the Kahisi reaches 10 m . Around the lake there is a spruce and pine forest, which is pleasant to walk through, and where you can pick mushrooms and berries. The air in the lake area is clean, and the forest smells pleasantly of pine needles.

During the Soviet Union, Lake Kakhisi was popular. There was a tourist base on its shores, and a cable car led to it. Tourists who came here in those days have warm, sincere memories of a vacation on the shores of a small mountain lake. Now there is no base, and the cable car has long fallen into disrepair and collapsed, only a few supports remain.

Only 15 years ago, Lake Kahisi was known for its purest water, it was possible to go scuba diving without special glasses. But over time, the water in the lake has become polluted, and the bottom is no longer visible from the shore. However, it is quite possible to get a job on the shore of the lake with a fishing rod and even catch a couple of carp. Many people come here in order to engage in such a calm and contemplative kind of recreation.

How to get to Lake Kahisi?

You can take a taxi from Borjomi cities to the village of Chobishevi. The lake is about 9 km from Chobishevi. You can overcome this path on foot, or you can arrange a horse ride. Some tourists complain that it is impossible to get to the lake by motorcycle – the road is slippery. We advise you to take this fact into account when you go on a trip.

When to arrive?

It is best to come to the lake in late spring, summer and early autumn. Three seasons will show you the lake from different sides. In spring you will see a sea of flowers, in summer you can go fishing on the shores of the lake and eat juicy raspberries that grow on its shores, and in autumn it's time to go for mushrooms.
