To the Source of Rioni: 2-Day Trek in Racha-Lechkhumi
The Racha-Lechkhumi region of Kvemo Svaneti is located in northwestern Georgia.
There are majestic mountain peaks and caves created by nature itself, wild rivers, waterfalls, mountain lakes. This is unique, the most beautiful places of Georgia.
The largest city and administrative center of the region is Ambrolauri.
In ancient times it was the residence of the kings of Imeretia.

You can enjoy all this beauty on a hike to Sasvano lakes and the source of the Rioni River. Walking along the Caucasus Range, you will admire the corners of pristine nature.
The river Rioni is one of the largest in Transcaucasia, its length is more than 320 km. In translation from Svanic "rien" means "big river". The source of the Rioni is on the Eden glacier, among the peaks of the Greater Caucasus. Historical sources say that gold was mined in the river.
The river is very different. In some places, it is navigable, and in the section of the Rioni near the town of Oni, extreme-active recreation is popular - rafting on inflatable boats.
Lake Sasvano is located on a mountain range, at an altitude of 2680 m above sea level.
These places are almost mystical in their beauty, especially at sunset. The surrounding mountains are reflected in the water surface. The purest mountain air is magical.
Route description
The best time to go hiking is in summer or in early autumn, in September.
The route of medium complexity is designed for 2 days, its length is 34 km.
Day 1:
The route starts at the small village of Tevresho in the municipality of Oni. Over the bridge the trail leads to the right bank of the Rioni and further along the gorge. Where the waters of the Rioni merge with the Luhumi stream, you need to cross the Luhumi. Then the trail climbs along the ridge between the rivers. Along the ridge, after about 4 km, you come to the lake. Here you can camp and stay for the night.
Day 2:
From the lakes your way to the Vatsisveri Pass. Its height is 2914 m.
From here you can enjoy magnificent panorama: forests, meadows, mountains, headwaters of Rioni river, Eden glacier.
