The current garden stands on a site where back in the 17th–18th centuries a garden was laid out at the royal court of Kartli-Kakheti. The famous traveler Jean-Chardin mentioned in his diaries how tenderly the wife of the Georgian king cared for this place. After Georgia's annexation to Russia, the garden became state property.

In 1845, by order of the Viceroy Mikhail Vorontsov, the site officially received the status and name of "Botanical Garden." In 1896–1904, the territory expanded dynamically. In the 1930s, the former Muslim cemetery by the Tsavkisistskali River and the slopes of Mount Tabor were annexed to the garden.

Today, its official name is the Georgian National Botanical Garden.

One of the highlights of the route is the waterfall in the Leghvtakhevi Gorge. A path through the garden leads right to it, and it can only be accessed from the inside—not from the street side. In summer, it is much cooler near the waterfall than in the city. It serves as an excellent resting point halfway through your journey.

1️⃣ Choose your entry point in advance: the main entrance from the Old Town side or from the funicular side (the second option lets you descend down the gorge, which is much easier).

3️⃣ Find the bamboo grove—it is set back from the main path but is well worth the effort.

4️⃣ Head down into the gorge—take the bridges toward the waterfall. This is the most picturesque and refreshing section.
