FAQ

Who built the Bridge of Peace in Tbilisi?

The bridge was designed by Italian architect Michele De Lucchi (of the AMDL Circle studio), and its lighting system by French lighting designer Philippe Martinaud. It was commissioned by the Tbilisi City Hall at the initiative of President Mikheil Saakashvili.

When did the Bridge of Peace open?

On May 6, 2010 - Saint George's Day, the day of Georgia's patron saint. Construction took approximately 269 days.

How long is the Bridge of Peace?

It is 156 meters long and about 5 meters wide. The structure rests on four steel pylons. (The English-language Wikipedia gives a rounded figure of 150 m, but technical documentation and most Russian-language sources cite 156 m.)

How much did the Bridge of Peace cost?

According to official figures from the Tbilisi City Hall, it cost 12.5 million Georgian lari - roughly 7.5 million U.S. dollars at the time of construction. Annual maintenance of the lighting costs about 400,000 lari.

Why is the bridge nicknamed "Always Ultra"?

This is a local nickname: the curved glass canopy visually resembles the shape of a feminine hygiene product from the well-known advertising campaign of the same name. Tbilisi residents and foreign tourists alike use the nickname jokingly. Other unofficial names include "the glass thing" (steklyashka) and "the bridge of love."

What does the Morse code on the bridge mean?

Once every hour, the lighting flashes in a special rhythm, transmitting in Morse code the names of the chemical elements from the Periodic Table that make up the human body. According to lighting designer Philippe Martinaud, this is "a hymn to life and to peace among people and nations" - a symbol that, regardless of nationality, all human beings are made of the same elements.

Can I walk across the bridge for free?

Yes. The bridge is open around the clock, admission is free, and no tickets are required.

When is the best time to visit the Bridge of Peace?

In the evening - ideally during the "blue hour" (15–30 minutes after sunset), when the lighting is already on but the sky has not yet turned fully dark. The lights switch on 90 minutes before sunset and stay on all night, turning off 90 minutes after sunrise.

What is the bridge made of?

The load-bearing structure is built from steel tubes, and the upper canopy from tempered glass. The frame was manufactured entirely in Italy and delivered to Tbilisi on roughly 200 trucks, then assembled on site. The LED fixtures in the canopy and the railing lights were produced by Dutch (Primo Exposures, RENA Electronica) and German (Glas-Platz) companies.

What is near the Bridge of Peace?

On one side: Old Tbilisi, the sulfur baths of Abanotubani, the Metekhi Church, the monument to Vakhtang Gorgasali, and the path up to Narikala Fortress. On the other side: Rike Park with its singing fountains, the lower station of the cable car to Narikala, the Avlabari Presidential Residence, and the "Periscope" - Massimiliano Fuksas's unfinished music and exhibition center.

Who is Michele De Lucchi?

An Italian architect and industrial designer (born 1951), one of the founders of radical design and postmodernism, and the founder of the AMDL Circle studio. In Tbilisi he designed three landmark projects: the Bridge of Peace (2010), the Avlabari Presidential Residence (completed in 2007–2009), and the building of Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs. He is among the best-known masters of contemporary European architecture.

A serene arc suspended in the air, this unique marvel is more than just a means to cross the river. It feels like walking through a bridge of stars as the twinkling lights whisper a cosmic hymn. The fusion of steel and glass is a symphony, resonating with the life and peace it stands for. A place where time seems to pause, captivating the soul with its quiet elegance.

A stunning blend of modern design against Tbilisi's historic backdrop, this architectural marvel dazzles both day and night. Walking across, you feel a serene connection as vibrant lights dance with reflections on the river below. Unexpectedly delightful, with plenty of quirks nearby to explore—this landmark is both a visual feast and a step into the heart of the city.
