The type of building is given in its very name: a basilica, that is a longitudinal church with an elongated hall rather than a cross-domed structure. For Shida Kartli this is a characteristic form, widespread since the early Middle Ages.

The Marian basilica is the best-known church of Nabakhtevi and the church most people come to the village for. It stands in the central part, and two more village churches are close by, a couple of hundred metres away: those of John the Baptist and of the Mother of God. Three buildings form a dense core.

Its age has to be judged by the masonry and proportions: compare the thickness of the walls and the character of the arches with the neighbouring churches, and the difference is usually visible.

The 15th-century monument in Nabakhtevi was constructed on the orders of Kutsna Amirejibi in the Cheratkhevi ravine. It features a hall church and a bell tower as part of the Nabakhtevi Virgin Mary church complex. The hall church, made of gray hewn stones, measures 14.5 by 9.35 meters and has two entrances: one from the west made of brick and another from the north. Inside, there are two semicircular niches and a window in the semicircular apse. It showcases a fresco of the Holy Virgin in Paradise, depicted on a throne with saints. The church's wall paintings were created between 1412 and 1431 and reflect Byzantine artistic styles. Some of these works are now housed in the Art Museum of Georgia. The painting on the wall separating the hall contains three sections: the top register features the argus-eye, the second depicts Abraham's hospitality, and the third shows church fathers and Svimeon Mesvete. In 2006, the Nabakhtevi Virgin Mary church was designated a National Cultural Monument of Georgia.

This location showcases one of the highest achievements in Georgian wall painting. While the artwork leans towards a Greek style (Paleologos/Post Paleologos), the architecture clearly reflects Georgian design.
