John the Baptist, Natlismtsemeli in Georgian, literally the one who performs baptism, is among the most frequent dedications in the country. In Nabakhtevi his church stands in the very centre of the village.
A few dozen metres away are the Marian basilica and the church of the Mother of God: three buildings form a dense core, while two more stand on the edges of the village. Such density usually points to an old and once populous settlement with several communities.
All three churches of the core are visible from one street, and walking between them takes only minutes. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf. Two more village churches, Kviratskhoveli and that of St. George, stand on the eastern and southern edges.
