The Bana monastery stands in the wooded hills near Kodmani village in the west of Shida Kartli. The name Bana is also known from the cathedral in historic Tao, which remained outside present day Georgia, so the places differ while the name is shared.
The area lies south of Khashuri, in the hills above the Kura valley. Monastic houses cluster here: the Pine monastery lives half a kilometre to the west, and other small communities are tucked into the neighbouring hollows.
Modest clothing is appropriate in the monastery, and women may want a headscarf. Photography and attending services are best agreed with the residents.
