In the dense, monstrous greenery, in the depths of the deciduous forest, the Green Monastery, also known as the Chitakhevsky St. George Monastery, is located like a treasure. It lies quietly near the picturesque village of Chitakhevi, just a few kilometers from Borjomi, in the heart of Georgia.
This sacred complex still serves as a monastery for monks who strive to pray for the well-being of their country and people. The history of its greatness goes back to the ancient times of the 9th century, when, according to legend, it was created by the disciples of the great Georgian figure Grigol Khanzteli - Christopher and Theodor. Consisting of three basilica churches and a bell tower, this monastery impresses with its ornaments, which are a magnificent example of Georgian architecture.
The church and monastery, built at the same time, reflect the spirit of the mid-twentieth century and impress with their beauty, despite the relative simplicity of the decor. The towering, two-story bell tower is a true work of art: on the ground floor there is a chapel, and on the second there is a luxurious gazebo with ornaments, inviting guests to private reflection.
The history of the monastery is not without tragedy: in the 16th century, during the invasion of Shah Tamaz, it witnessed an attack, as a result of which the monks were killed and tortured. Even today, on its territory, you can see the miraculous relics of monks and traces of shed blood in difficult times. This is the place where the shrine retains its grandeur through the centuries.
In the 1980s, the temple was restored after a long period of abandonment, and in 2002 the monastery underwent a complete restoration, continuing to serve as a place of prayer, repentance and spiritual strength.
