  • Description

The Likani Church of the Holy Virgin Mary is an ancient architectural miracle, lost among the emerald valleys of Samtskhe-Javakheti. Its origin is associated with the 7th-9th centuries, and, despite the time, it remains evidence of the greatness of Georgian history. Today the church is shrouded in ruins, but even in its incomplete form it radiates the magic of centuries.

The main part of the church is the nave, ending with a semicircular apse, as if looking into the past with incomprehensible depth. Nearby, like a guard, rises a bell tower, outwardly reminiscent of the fortress walls of lost eras. The walls of the bell tower, built from uncut huge stones, seem to be silent witnesses of turbulent times.

The journey to this historical gem begins from Borjomi, just a few kilometers away. The road, running among picturesque landscapes, ends at the entrance to the temple. Follow the signs and after two kilometers of walking you will find yourself in front of the ancient gates of Likani.

A visit to the Likani Church is not just a walk into the past, it is an immersion into the world of the spiritual heritage of Georgia. For those who value history and culture, this place is an inevitable stop on a trip to this amazing country.
