The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A Marian dedication means the main day here falls at the end of August, on Mariamoba, when village churches across Georgia gather the whole neighbourhood.
Varkhani stands right on the road leading to Abastumani, a mountain resort known for its pine air and an old astrophysical observatory. Many drive straight through the village on the way up, and that is a pity: the church is visible from the road and deserves a stop. The yard is well kept, with somewhere to pause for a few minutes in the shade.
The parish is active: covering clothing, a headscarf for women. The trip pairs naturally with Abastumani itself, reached by the same road uphill.
