The church carries the name of Queen Ketevan, one of the most venerated saints of Georgia. The ruler of Kakheti died a martyr in Persian captivity at the beginning of the seventeenth century, refusing to renounce Christianity, and her memory lives on in dozens of dedications across the country.
Khevasheni is a small village in the western part of Samtskhe-Javakheti, away from the main roads of the region. Around it lies the valley along which the road runs towards Abastumani with its pine air and old observatory. The village itself is quiet, and the church remains its centre of meaning.
The rule of modest dress applies in village churches too: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women. The yard is small and cars are left along the street.
