The church at Untsa belongs to the kind of village church guidebooks never mention: a small village in the hills, stone walls, no tourist infrastructure at all. Neither a name nor a date has become attached to the building.
Untsa lies west of Akhaltsikhe, in the same group of villages as Varkhani and Khevasheni. The road towards Abastumani runs through this valley, and three village churches string neatly onto one route. The turning to Untsa itself is poorly marked, but a view over the valley opens from almost every bend.
Come here to look rather than to read: there will be no explanations on the spot.Dress soberly and treat the walls with care.
💡 Tip
- A village church with no established name or date
- Untsa village west of Akhaltsikhe, Samtskhe-Javakheti
- A logical pairing with neighbouring Varkhani and Khevasheni
