The church of St. George in Zemo Skhvilisi is the church of the upper of the pair of Skhvilisi villages, on the slope south of Akhaltsikhe. It stands above the basilica of the Virgin Mary in the lower village, and the vertical speaks: the Catholic church by the road, the St. George church above it on the slope.
The climb to the upper village is short, and in return come views over the Akhaltsikhe side. Paired with the basilica and the chapel of lower Skhvilisi it makes a whole route through one village with three very different churches: a chapel, a Catholic parish and an Orthodox church.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service. The climb along the village road is better made in dry weather: after rain the track turns muddy.
