Surb Khach translates from Armenian as Holy Cross. It is one of the most widespread dedications of Armenian churches: shrines of this name stand from Javakheti to Crimea, and the church in Didi Pamaji is a local version of that wider tradition.

Outwardly the building is restrained, without the abundant carving typical of large Armenian monasteries, yet recognisable by its silhouette and proportions. The village lies south-east of Akhaltsikhe, with the church in the central part of the settlement.

Visitors are few and the place keeps its own order. Sober clothing is expected, and voices in the yard are kept low. Anyone interested in the Armenian heritage of the region should combine the visit with the Trinity chapel in Tskaltbila.

📌 In brief

  • An Armenian church whose name translates as Holy Cross
  • Didi Pamaji village south-east of Akhaltsikhe
  • A logical pairing is the Armenian Trinity chapel in Tskaltbila
