The ruins of the Abi church near Sadzeli village are the traces of an old church on the slopes south-east of Akhaltsikhe. The name of the place occurs in two spellings, Abi and Abu, and the ruins do not change for it: stone masonry, grass and silence, with traces of the foundation underfoot.
Few find such places, and therein lies their value: a short climb up the slope from Sadzeli, and you are alone with old Samtskhe history. From Akhaltsikhe it is under half an hour, the walking part included.
The place is open and can be approached at any time: there are no services here. The masonry needs care: no climbing on the walls, no shifting of stones, no traces left. The best time is morning, before the grass warms and snakes come out on the stones.
