The church of St. George in Dzveli is the parish church of a village halfway between Akhaltsikhe and Aspindza. It stands on the village street, serves the people of the area and lives by the ordinary parish calendar: services, feasts, christenings.
The village has a curious linguistic fate: the name Dzveli coincides with the Georgian word for old, hence the constant confusion in machine translations. For a traveller it is simply a handy stop on the Vardzia highway: five minutes off the road, and you are in a true Samtskhe village.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service if one is under way. On Giorgoba the whole village gathers by the church, and no better day to meet it could be devised.
