The Ijareti bell tower is a stone belfry in Ijareti village, a notable landmark of the southern side of the Potskhovi valley. Free-standing bell towers in Georgia often outlived their churches, and the Ijareti samreklo, as a belfry is called in Georgian, marks the place of an old church complex.
For a traveller it is a short but atmospheric stop: stone masonry, village quiet and the horizons of the Adigeni valley around. The bell tower earns its place on routes through unobvious Samtskhe: free-standing belfries like this are counted on one hand in the valley. The best light for the masonry comes in the morning and before sunset.
It is seen freely at any time, from outside: the place is open. The old masonry needs care, and the village yards around ask the traveller’s usual respect.
