The naeklesiari in the centre of Zazalo village in Adigeni Municipality marks the site of a church that has been entirely destroyed. Walls between half a metre and a metre high remain of the building, and only the lower courses of the stone slab roof survive.
Hewn stones and other architectural details are scattered around. They show that the church was well built, though the plan can no longer be reconstructed from what remains.
On the east side, right in the sanctuary area, local people have built a small chapel and set a stone bearing an inscription into its masonry. So the place keeps working: the old church is gone, but the place of prayer has stayed where it was.
💡 Tip
- A chapel built by locals right in the sanctuary area
