The small church dedicated to Saint George stands near Gogasheni, about a kilometre from the ruins of the Archangel church. The word patara, small, distinguishes it from the principal church of the area.
Gogasheni belongs to Aspindza Municipality and holds several church sites at once: the main church of John the Baptist, a church at the foot of the complex and the Archangel ruins. The area is dry and stony, at the entrance to the Kura valley. Vardzia and Khertvisi are not far away.
A headscarf is useful for women, as it may be required at the entrance. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Allow no more than half an hour for the visit.
- Bring water, as there are no kiosks nearby.
- Keep some cash for a donation, as there is no card terminal.
Getting there
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
