The Surb Sarkis church, that is of St Sarkis, serves the Catholic community of the Armenian village of Azavreti. Surb means saint in Armenian, and Sarkis is among the most venerated saints of the Armenian tradition.
Azavreti stands on the Javakheti plateau north of Akhalkalaki. Armenian communities of different traditions live in the villages of this part of Javakheti, and the church remains the centre of parish life.
Services follow the community calendar; at other times the doors may be closed. Guests are asked to dress modestly.
