The Atskuri cathedral is a historic shrine of the Kura valley, the cathedral church of the old village of Atskuri between Akhaltsikhe and Borjomi. Its grand walls are visible straight from the highway, and above the village, on a sheer rock, rises the Atskuri fortress.
For centuries Atskuri was one of the chief places of Samtskhe, and the cathedral with the fortress still shape the look of this stretch of the gorge. The road here is a main one, so the shrine fits easily into any route between Borjomi, Akhaltsikhe and Vardzia.
For pilgrims and travellers: modest dress, quiet inside. Have a look at the fortress on the rock as well - the climb to it starts from the village. Follow the coordinates.
