The Alandzia church near Toloshi village is a quiet church in the Mtkvari valley south of Aspindza, on the road people take to Vardzia. Most rush past, hurrying to the cave town, and in vain: the valley between Aspindza and Vardzia is strewn with quiet places of spiritual heritage like this, and Alandzia is among the most accessible of them.
Alandzia is one of those places that reward the unhurried: a half-hour stop, stone walls, the sound of the Mtkvari below and the Javakheti upland around. A handy pause on the way that gives the grand Vardzia route a human scale. Half an hour here changes the mood of the whole valley day.
The church is seen freely: there are usually no regular services here. The old masonry needs care, and the slope above the river asks for a careful step.
