Walls remain of the Saint George church in Kvarshi. There is no roof, and the masonry is of the dark volcanic stone usual for the Javakheti plateau.
Kvarshi belongs to Akhalkalaki Municipality. The nearest marked site, the church ground of the village of Toki, is about three and a half kilometres away. The plateau here is high and treeless, open to the winds in winter and scorched by the sun in summer.
Do not climb on the masonry, as the walls hold worse than they look. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Combine the visit with neighbouring villages to save time.
- Bring a torch if it is dark inside.
- Take your litter away with you.
Getting there
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
