The Archangel church in Saro is a working church with a convent in a village above the Vardzia road. The house lives by prayer and labour, and everyone who has climbed here speaks of the peace of the place: a rare case where the word serenity is no exaggeration.
Saro is worth the visit in itself: an old village on a plateau above the Mtkvari, with towers, ancient walls and its own unhurried order. The village also holds another church, the Second Sunday chapel, while below continues the grand Vardzia route with the Khertvisi fortress: a couple of hours is a sensible allowance for the village and the convent.
Pilgrims and travellers are received kindly, but the order asks respect: modest dress is essential, a headscarf for women, quiet on the grounds, and the nuns are not photographed without leave.
